# Identifiers

Unique identifiers label records, files and messages so they are very unlikely to clash, even when created on different machines. A random UUID has 122 random bits, so duplicates are practically impossible, and time-based formats such as UUID version 7 and ULID also store their creation time, which can be decoded.
