Fuel use is distance divided by fuel economy: a 300-mile trip in a car that averages 30 miles per gallon uses 10 gallons, so the fuel cost is 10 times the price per gallon. Similar sums give electric vehicle charging costs, tire size comparisons and driving time with breaks.
