# Subnets & Addressing

Subnetting divides an IP network into smaller blocks so addresses can be assigned and routed in an orderly way. Splitting 192.168.1.0/24 into four equal parts, for example, gives four /26 subnets of 64 addresses each, 62 of them usable by devices.
