# Web & SEO Tools

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the work of helping search engines and AI assistants find, understand and present a website's pages. In practice that means reviewing pages, writing the tags behind search snippets and social link previews, guiding crawlers, testing live sites, tagging campaign links and publishing files such as ads.txt. No tool can promise rankings.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does a robots.txt file do?

A robots.txt file tells crawlers which paths of a site they may request. It follows the Robots Exclusion Protocol (RFC 9309) and is a public request rather than a lock, so it does not protect private pages. To keep a crawlable page out of search results, use a `noindex` robots meta tag instead.

### What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters are tags added to the end of a link, such as `utm_source`, `utm_medium` and `utm_campaign`, that tell analytics tools where a visit came from. They do not change the page a visitor sees. Avoid them on links between pages of your own site, because analytics tools may then credit the visit to the wrong source.

### What is structured data?

Structured data is code added to a page, usually JSON-LD using the schema.org vocabulary, that describes the page's subject, such as a product, a recipe or an event, in a form machines can read. Search engines can use it to show rich results, but they do not promise to.
