# Text & Writing Tools

Text and writing tools change or measure text that you paste or type: counting words and characters, converting letter case, removing extra spaces and duplicate lines, sorting lists, comparing two versions and formatting citations. Plain text carries characters only, so bold, colors and fonts copied from a word processor are dropped when pasted into a plain text box.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do word counters count words?

Most word counters treat any run of characters between spaces or line breaks as one word, so a hyphenated term such as well-known counts once and numbers count as words. Languages written without spaces, such as Chinese, Japanese and Thai, need other rules, such as counting characters, so totals can differ between apps.

### Do character counts include spaces?

It depends on the counter, which is why many show two figures: characters with spaces and characters without spaces. Limits for posts, text messages and form fields usually count spaces, and some systems count an emoji as two characters because of how it is stored.

### What is lorem ipsum?

Lorem ipsum is placeholder text used in design and publishing to show how a layout looks before the real copy is ready. It comes from scrambled passages of *De finibus bonorum et malorum*, written by Cicero in 45 BC, so it looks like Latin but has no meaning.
