# Video Tools

Video tools process clips in formats such as MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV and AVI: reducing file size, converting formats, trimming and joining clips, extracting or replacing the soundtrack, adding subtitles and making GIFs. The file extension names the container, and the codec inside, such as H.264, HEVC or AV1, determines how efficiently the picture is compressed.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between MP4 and MOV?

Both are containers that can hold the same H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio. MOV is Apple's QuickTime format, while MP4 is an ISO standard (MPEG-4 Part 14) with wider support in browsers and on Android and Windows devices. When a MOV file uses codecs that MP4 supports, such as H.264 and AAC, it converts to MP4 by copying the streams, without any loss of quality.

### How do I make a video file smaller?

Lower the bitrate, because file size is roughly bitrate multiplied by duration: one minute at 4 Mbit/s is about 30 MB, and at 8 Mbit/s about 60 MB. Reducing the resolution or frame rate, or switching to a more efficient codec such as HEVC or AV1, keeps the picture acceptable at that lower bitrate.
