Document Tools

Document tools handle office files other than PDFs: Word and OpenDocument text files, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations and EPUB eBooks. Typical tasks are converting between formats, viewing a file without the program that made it, merging or splitting files and cleaning up content. Any task that creates or reads a PDF belongs to the PDF tools.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between DOC and DOCX?

DOC is the binary format of Word 97 to 2003. DOCX, the default since Word 2007, is Office Open XML: a ZIP package of XML files standardized as ECMA-376 and ISO/IEC 29500. DOCX files are usually smaller, and current versions of Word and LibreOffice open both formats.

What is the difference between XLSX and CSV?

An XLSX workbook can hold several sheets with formulas, formatting, charts and data types. A CSV file stores only the values of a single sheet as plain text, so saving a workbook as CSV drops everything else. CSV is the usual choice for moving data between apps and databases.

Can I read an EPUB without an e-reader?

Yes. EPUB is an open eBook standard maintained by the W3C, built from web pages, styles and images packed into a ZIP file, so reading apps exist for browsers, phones, tablets and computers as well as dedicated e-reader devices.
