Image Tools

Image tools edit and convert pictures in formats such as JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF and SVG: shrinking files, changing dimensions, adjusting color, removing backgrounds and reading or deleting metadata. Raster formats such as JPG and PNG store a grid of pixels, while SVG stores shapes as drawing instructions and stays sharp at any size.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between JPG and PNG?

JPG (also written JPEG) uses lossy compression, which keeps photos small but slightly blurs sharp edges and cannot store transparency. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, so it suits logos, screenshots and graphics with text, but a photo saved as PNG is usually several times larger than the same photo as JPG.

Why do iPhone photos use the HEIC format?

Since iOS 11, the iPhone 7 and later models save photos in the HEIC format by default, because it usually stores the same visual quality as JPG in a smaller file. Some websites, older Windows versions and many apps still cannot open HEIC, which is why photos are often converted to JPG before sharing.

What resolution does a photo need for printing?

About 300 pixels per inch gives sharp prints viewed up close, and around 150 pixels per inch is usually acceptable for posters seen from a distance. A 6 × 4 inch print at 300 pixels per inch needs an image of 1800 × 1200 pixels.
