Everyday Life Tools

Everyday life tools do the math behind household jobs: how much paint, tile or soil to buy, what an appliance costs to run, how to scale a recipe, what a road trip costs in fuel and how much food a party needs. Results are only as good as the measurements and local prices you enter.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out the area of a room in square feet?

Multiply the room's length by its width, with both measured in feet. A room 12 feet long and 10 feet wide has an area of 120 square feet. For an L-shaped room, split the floor into rectangles, work out each area and add them together.

How is the running cost of an appliance calculated?

Multiply the appliance's power in kilowatts by the hours it runs to get kilowatt-hours (kWh), then multiply by your electricity price per kWh. A 2,000-watt heater used for 3 hours uses 6 kWh, which costs 1.80 at a price of 0.30 per kWh.
