File and archive tools work on files in general rather than one kind of document: packing and unpacking archives such as ZIP, 7z, RAR and TAR, identifying a file from its contents, viewing 3D models, splitting and comparing large files, and opening saved emails and contact cards.

All three bundle many files into one compressed archive. ZIP is built into Windows and macOS, so it opens without extra software. 7z, the format of the open-source 7-Zip, often compresses smaller. RAR is a proprietary format: only software from its developer, such as WinRAR, can create RAR archives, while many other programs, including 7-Zip, can extract them.
Because it was made in two steps. TAR first bundles files and folders into one archive without compressing them, keeping their paths and permissions; gzip then compresses that single file. Unpacking reverses both steps, and most archive tools handle both in a single action.
