Hashes & Checksums

A hash function turns any input into a short, fixed-length value, and changing even one character of the input gives a different result. When a downloaded file's SHA-256 hash matches the one its publisher lists, the file arrived unchanged. MD5 and SHA-1 are no longer safe against deliberate tampering, though they still catch accidental corruption.
